George VI – Silver – Rupee, Currency – 1938 to 1945

From 1940 coins were struck in a quaternary alloy of 500 parts silver, 400 parts copper, 50 parts nickel and 50 parts zinc.

Initially, coins had a straight grained edge but 1939/1940 the so-called security edge was introduced. However, a few specimens with later dates have straight grained edges. It seems unlikely that the mint would have struck these deliberately, and equally unlikely that they would make such a simple mistake. The existence of these coins with straight grained edges remains a mystery. They could, of course, be high grade forgeries, or perhaps secretly struck by a mint employee with the intention of selling them to collectors. Another possibility is that they were struck much later during the period of restriking at the Bombay mint, and somehow escaped into circulation. Whatever the reason, they are recorded here and left for the reader to determine how they might fit into the series.

George VI – Nickel – Rupee, Mule – 1947

This may be a pattern for the new coinage of republican India, although Pridmore considers it to be a later striking from mixed dies for collectors. These coins (rupee, half and quarter), whatever their status, really belong to the post-British coinage of India.
