1840 to 1850 – Victoria Continuous Legend – Mohur
On
26th May 1840,
the Calcutta mint
master suggested that the obverse dies for the gold coins could be prepared
from the silver dies with the addition of the date below the bust. The rupee
die would serve for the double mohur and that of the
half rupee for the single mohur. No double mohurs were issued, but the mint master’s suggestion for
the mohur was accepted and dies were sent to the
mints at Madras
and Bombay on 13th January 1841.
The reverse design continued the lion and palm motive.
These
new mohurs showing the effigy of Queen Victoria were declared
current of 10th
February 1841 [1].
