India 1850 to 1860 –
Victoria, Divided Legend – Half Rupee
As
with the rupee, the reverse dies had to be remade in Calcutta after the originals had been
received from London
in 1849. The die engraver copied the reverse Persian legend incorrectly
spelling ana
as ata.
No
marks are known that allow distinction between Bombay and Calcutta Mints. Madras coins are distinguished by the
presence of an extra initial (S or B) on the truncation of the neck. The
initials S or B are very similar and care must be taken to correctly identify
these marks when examining coins.
