Madras Mint – Early Coinages – South Indian System – Gold, Three Swami Pagoda 1691 to 1806

The Dutch were the first European residents to issue a pagoda bearing the image of three Hindu gods or goddesses. This coin type became very popular and was copied by the British, perhaps first at Fort St David (although these pieces have not been catalogued as coming from that mint), and then at Madras.
