Negapatam Mint – Early Coinages – Hindu System – Gold, ‘Iskat’ or ‘Scott’ Pagoda 1781

The coin shown below contains 62% gold, which fits with the reported fineness of the ‘Scott’ pagoda. The only way to distinguish these from Madras pagodas seems to be by measuring the gold content.

Anecdotally this style of pagoda has been call the ‘Scott’ (or Negapatam) pagoda However, Barbara Mears has attributed this style to Travancore and XRF analysis of one specimen shows that it contains too much gold (XRF: Au 70.8%, Ag 20.8% Cu 7.6%) to be the Scott pagoda
