Soho Mint – Copper, Pattern One Cash 1803

The one cash coin was so small that it required special production techniques, and these coins were produced last of all the denominations. Matthew Boulton had sent John Phillp to London in 1802 to consult the EIC’s experts on the designs, and he returned in October. Production of the three larger denominations began almost immediately, but production of the one cash pieces caused problems until January 1803 when a new method was perfected. The pattern shown here may have been Phillp’s original design that was not suitable for high throughput production. Perhaps the design was then modified to that of the currency coins to accommodate the new method of minting the coins.

Howard Simmons first drew my attention to this coin

Soho Mint – Northern Circars – Copper, Pattern Dub – Type 4

This pattern is an early design for the 1802 coinage of Ceylon, the obverse being from the Madras coinage of 1794/97 except for a slight change in the legend, and the reverse being a particular, rather more elongated form of the elephant seen on other patterns (see below). This style is extremely rare, with perhaps only two specimens in existence. However, although the obverse is modified from the Madras die, it is a distinctively different design, and therefore belongs to Ceylon and not Madras. The coin is included in the catalogue for the sake of completeness.
