Indo-Greek – Pantaleon (c190-180 BC) – Silver – Type I

With Pantaleon, a new dynasty came to rule in Bactria. Pantaleon replaced the Heracles of the Euthydemids with the enthroned Zeus, who is inspired by the tetradrachms of Alexander the Great: instead of the eagle, however, he holds a small Hecate in his right hand. Hecate was the goddess of witchcraft and magic, as well as the mistress of the underworld; it is embodied by three women whose heads are clearly recognizable in the present specimen. It is rarely depicted in ancient coinage, in Bactria only under Pantaleon and his successor Agathocles. The chronological classification of Pantaleon's reign is based on the fact that he may have been responsible for the introduction of the Yavana era: this era, which was still in use south of the Hindu Kush in post-Christian times, began in 186/85 BC. The fact that Pantaleon reigned only for a short time is suggested by the pronounced rarity of his tetradrachms (from Gorny & Mosch)
