The city of Fatehnagar (Khadkee) was founded by Malik Ambar in 1610. It is widely believed that Aurangzeb changed its name to 'Aurangabad' during his second viceregal term in the Deccan in 1652-53. However, coins struck with the mintname 'Aurangabad' prove that this name change had been in effect as early as AH1048. This coin proves it had been in vogue in RY12 of Shahjahan, which corresponds to c.1638-39. The name-change must therefore have taken place during Aurangzeb's first term as the viceroy of Deccan (1636-1643). (From Shailendra Bhandare)

The mint was known as Aurangābād until AH 1100, after which the epithet, Khujista Bunyād was used. See Nelson Wright
