Orchha, Orchhanagar Mint – Silver

Jan Lingen wrote:

Orchha, rupee i.n.o. Shah Alam II, Ry.6, mint-name: aūnrchhā nagar (city of Orchha).
Evidently issued by the Bundela Rajput ruler of Orchha. Late Mughal zodiac rupees of Orchha Nagar mint are known (ref.: JONS 213, pp. 14-17) having a similar obverse legend.
The calligraphy is pretty much the same as the rupees struck at Jhansi (Balwantnagar) while under the Awadh administration. Those rupees are known with the Ry.’s 3 to 5

During Ry. 6 of Shah Alam II Jhansi came again under control of the Marathas and rupees with Ry.6 with the mint-name Balwantnagar are known (M/W, T8). Those Maratha rupees differ in calligraphy substantially from the previous issues struck under Awadh.
Coins (non-zodiac and zodiac issues) of Orchha Nagar mint are only known from a single date combination, viz. AH1177/Ry.6. As the dates mismatch, the later (Ry.6 =1764/5) may be more trustworthy.
It is possible that when the Marathas took over the control of Jhansi (Balwantnagar) the craftsman of the mint, previous employed under Awadh, got employ with the ruler of Orchha and got this short-lived issue produced there. The inclusion of the Maratha “pataka” symbol may suggest a subordinate relationship with the Marathas.
