Lot description:

Gaura Simha (SE 1678-1686, AD 1756-1764), Gold Mohur, Nagari legend on obv. Jaya Sri Gaura Simha Manipureshvarat Tenotapadani, rev. legend reads Veshaka Sudi terakhava de 1 Samvata 1678 with the 8 in a line above 167, SE 1678 (KM 29 but a line drawing), Rhodes and Bose, The Coinage of Manipur, type 3, p. 44/93). Very Fine+, Extremely Rare. This Mohur is a rarer variant of the Extremely Rare Mohurs of Manipur. The legend shown in the KM line drawing reads Sri Sri Gaura Simha, whereas this mohur reads Jaya Sri Gaura Simha. Only two more such coins are known, both in the British Museum. This piece has some difference in reverse legend arrangement, thus it is probably unique.

It is a heavy square rupee of Gaura Simha of Manipur. This particular used to be in my own collection until I sold it to Nick Rhodes when I gave up collecting Indian coins back in the late 80s. Some of you may recall seeing a lovely gold mohur of this ruler in an Indian auction a little while ago. 12.78g

Lot description:

Manipur, Gaura Simha (c.1756-1764), square Rupee, 11.96g, Sk.1678, legends both sides, Jesrī Gaura Sīm/hā Manipure/sva Priyāta/mā Rānīh, rev. Vaisakh Su/dhī Terakhava/de 1, Samvat/ 1678, within a square frame, form of ‘6’ is unusual (RB. 8; KM. 23), toned very fine, extremely rare.
Coins of this ruler are rarely available and were probably issued in very limited quantities. This rupee was struck in the month of Vaisakh (the second month of the Hindu calendar) Sk. 1678 (AD 1756) most likely on the occasion of the installation of the king. It was during this reign that Manipur first made contact with the British, due to the threat from the Burmese.

Manipur, Marjit Singh, Silver Square 1/4 Rupee, Sake 1735, Obv: Nagari legend "Sri Manmanipure/svara Sri Maraji/t Singha Nripavara/sya", Rev: "Sri Sri Radha/Govindapada Ra/vinda Makaran'da/Madhu Ka(rasya)", 2.64g, 7.09x7.05mm, (Unlisted in major reference), about very fine, Exceedingly Rare.

In the year 1812 AD, Marjit Singh, the younger brother of King Chaurajit Singh sought help from the Burmese for ensuring the acquisition of the throne of Manipur, even agreeing to vassal status. Chaurajit was compelled to flee to Kachar, and Marjit became king. Although he agreed to the vassal status, he ruled more or less independently and struck a few gold and silver coins. This coin is dated 1735 SE which corresponds to the 1813 AD so we believe that it may have been struck during the first 2 years of his reign. The rupee coins of Marjit Singh are known earlier but this is the first known coin in Quarter Rupee denomination and being offered for the first time in any auction.

Highest rarity of Manipur coinage!

From Stan Goron who said:

And now from the sublime to the less than sublime, here is a "heavy" sel of Manipur, weighing 3.94g, the legend on which seems to say Ja da. These sels have uniface legends and relatively early ones of this sort of weight are very rare on the open market, most of the known ones being in institutional collections. Not pretty, but full of fascination.....RB p. 48

Base-metal Sels were the coins used by the ordinary people in their day to day transactions. These early types are larger and heavier than the more common Sels usually encountered. They are rarely seen outside Bengal, and are seldom available to collectors.
