auctioneer wrote: The presence of the noon symbol below the bind on this coin is
particularly enigmatic, especially when considered in the context of the
time. Following Kharak Singh's death, Rani Chand Kaur, his widow, held the
position of de facto regent for Nau Nihal Singh, Kharak Singh's son. This
coin also surfaced in VS 1898 after the death of her husband and during the
regency of her son, leading to the assumption that it belonged to Rani Chand
Kaur. Kharak Singh's death in 1840 AD (VS 1897) marked the end of his final
reign, and coins from that period are distinguishable by the 'OM' symbol in
Devnagri script and a dotted arrangement or aarsi-like symbol below the bind.
Following his death, Rani Chand Kaur took over as regent for their son Nau
Nihal Singh from 1840-1841 AD (VS 1897-1898), and a coin from VS 1898 was
minted with a 'Nun' symbol below the bind, intentionally placed to
differentiate it from other coins, which is believed to belong to Rani Chand
Kaur. The Noon symbol frequently appeared on coins minted between VS 1880 and
VS 1884, and also on frozen year series coins from
VS 1884/(18)85 to VS 1884/(18)89.4 |
