Sikh Empire – Lāhore Mint – 1856, Gold – Type 1

The year VS 1856 marked a turning point in the history of the Sikhs. In this year, Ranjit Singh, at the age of 19, having been Sardar of the Sukerchakia misl since 1792, obtained the grant of Lāhore from Shāh Zaman, the Durrānī ruler of Afghanistan. All gold coins of the Sikhs, apart from the small gold Rupees struck at Multan in VS 1905, are very rare.
