Mohurs struck to the heavy standard corresponded to 10-rupees as per Abu'l Fazal's record in Ain-i- Akbari. They are much rarer than the 9- rupee Mohurs. No gold is reported for Ujjain mint during Akbar's reign. Both these aspects make this coin a remarkable specimen. The mint-name appears to read al-Zarb Ujjain and the use of definitive article in the mint-name is attested in only one other mint in Akbar's coinage, which is Bang.

Jan Lingen wrote: In the AH995 dates observed, the 5 is often inscribed as a sigma like form. Therefore dates inscribed as 99o should probably be regarded as 990, instead of 995. Similar coins, however, in this series which show a somewhat larger 0 and a kind of decoration which comes close to the same coin dated 996, may represent the date 995.

SA wrote: AR ½ rupee (5.69g), NM, AH981, G-—, KM-—., Zeno-—, royal titles and date, all within octagon / kalima within circle, appears unpublished in any major reference. Calligraphically somewhat resembling issues of the Malwa region, but to the standard Mughal half rupee weight, unlike the local issues of Malwa. I would suspect an origin somewhere between Gujarat and Malwa.

Moghul Empire – Akbar – Ujjain Mint, Silver – Type 3, Ilāhī, Square

The peculiar shape of 'Muḥammad' on the obverse indicates an issue of Ujjain mint.
