Photo from Jan Lingen. Nur al-Din
Muhammad Jahangir. (AH1014-1037/AD1605-1627). AR Heavy Rupee (Sawai) (21 x 21
mm, 14.21 gm). Lahore mint. Dated AH 1020, regnal year 6, month Ardibihisht
(Zodiac sign Taurus)
Name and titles of Jahangir, Ry. / Ilahi month mint and date. Obv. and rev.
form a poetic couplet incorporating the Ilahi month. Couplet changed monthly.
Ref.: KM#160.2; PMC#1103.
Jahangir experimented with increasing the weight of the silver rupee, striking
20% heavier pieces called “jahangiri”, and 25% heavier pieces called
"sawai”. The Sawai standard was abolished on the 11th of Ardibihisht
AH1020. This rupee, therefore, was struck only during the first 10 days of the
month Ardibishsht. After this date (with a few rare exception) only coins of

Jan Lingen wrote: The above
coin of Lahore shows a very rare couplet which reads: This
type was first published by Framji J. Thanawala in Numismatic Supplement V.,
p.125-127 (1904). The legend as read by Mr. Thanawala, was partly corrected
by H.Nelson Wright in an editorially note at the end. |

Photo from Bhandare. Lahore - Zodiacal Rupee of
Jahangir with Noor Jahan, AH1036/RY21, 'Capricorn' sign, 11.21 gm. This has a
different couplet on reverse which is not encountered on any other coin of
Jahangir and Noor Jahan. It reads -
بحکم شاه جهانگیر سکه لاهور
ز نام نور جهان بادشاه شد پرنور
Ba-hukm-i-Shah Jahangir Sikkah-i-Lahore
za-Naam-i-Noor Jahan Badshah shud pur noor...
"By the order of king Jahangir, the coin of Lahore, through the name of
Empress Noor Jahan, has become full of light".
