Coins struck INO Shams al-dīn Īltutmish Sultan of Dehlī, by Governor Ghiyāth al-dīn 選waḍ. First Series AH 614-616, AD 1217-1220

History

羨lī bin Mardān was succeeded by Ghiyāth al-dīn 選waḍ, who alternated between declarations of independence and subservience to Īltutmish, the increasingly powerful ruler of Dehlī. 選waḍ was killed in AH 624 (AD 1227) and Bengal thereafter for the next 60 years was ruled by a succession of governors on behalf of the sultans of Dehlī.

Coinage

選waḍ took over as Governor of Bengal in AH 609 or 610. He does not appear to have struck any coins until AH 614. In that year and in AH 616 he struck a series of gold and silver horseman coins in the name of his overlord, the sultan of Dehlī, Īltutmish. Some of these coins bear dates that include not only the year of issue but also the day and month. They are, therefore, probably of a commemorative nature.

On these coins, Īltutmish is entitled al-quṭbī. This may refer to his original position as a freed slave of Quṭb al-dīn Aibak or the fact that he belonged to the Quṭbī rather than the Mu段zzī faction of nobles. On most of these coins, Īltutmish is also entitled abū値 muẕaffar, but some coins bear a different kunya, which 疎bū al-ḥārīth.

The obverse marginal legends all contain the Kalima and the date, though the latter is not always easy to decipher.

Legends

The standard legend is:

السلطان المعظم شمس الدنيا و الدين أبو المظفر إلتتمش القطبي ناصر أمير المؤمنين

= al-sulṭān al-mu疎ẕẕam shams al-dunyā wa al-dīn abū al-muẕaffar īltutmish al-quṭbī nāṣir amīr al-mū知inīn (= The great sultan, sun of the world and the faith father of the conqueror, Īltutmish, star, defender of the leader of the faithful).
