選waḍ took over as Governor of
Bengal in AH 609 or 610. He does not appear to have struck any coins until AH
614. In that year and in AH 616 he struck a series of gold and silver
horseman coins in the name of his overlord, the sultan of Dehlī,
Īltutmish. Some of these coins bear dates that include not only the year
of issue but also the day and month. They are, therefore, probably of a
commemorative nature. On
these coins, Īltutmish is entitled al-quṭbī.
This may refer to his original position as a freed slave of Quṭb
al-dīn Aibak or the fact that he belonged to the Quṭbī rather
than the Mu段zzī faction of nobles. On most of these coins,
Īltutmish is also entitled abū値
muẕaffar, but some coins bear a different kunya, which 疎bū al-ḥārīth. The
obverse marginal legends all contain the Kalima and the date, though the
latter is not always easy to decipher. |
