Photo from Indian
dealer, supposedly showing date 1800, but looks like 1805 altered. Asking price
Rs 1.25 lacs (approx £1,700 at time of writing!) –
2.13g
The numeral 8 on the obverse is enigmatic. The
coins generally weigh a fifth of a rupee. Several reasons for the 8 have been
discussed (see eg Bhandare & Stevens, ONSNL 172,
174, 177). One possibility is that these may have been issued during a brief
period when the value of the fifth rupees was only an eighth of a rupee.
