Calcutta Mint – Silver, Rupees for Use on the Malabar Coast – 1810 to 1813

These are derived from the earlier crescent marked rupees struck at Bombay or Tellicherry. Distinguishing features are the upside-down crescent, the simplified legend and the neat appearance of the coins. The full legend never appears and the coins appear to have been deliberately struck in this way.

Tellicherry Mint? – Moghul Style – Silver, Eighth Rupee?

The numeral 8 on the obverse is enigmatic. The coins generally weigh a fifth of a rupee. Several reasons for the 8 have been discussed (see eg Bhandare & Stevens, ONSNL 172, 174, 177). One possibility is that these may have been issued during a brief period when the value of the fifth rupees was only an eighth of a rupee.
