Edward VII – Silver – Rupee, Pattern – 1901 – Type 1

F.K.Wezel, who was then the engraver at the Calcutta mint, was responsible for preparing the two rupee patterns (this type and the next type) for the proposed new coinage in 1901. On the reverse of these coins is the imperial crown and this differs in design from that approved in a military dispatch from the Secretary of State issued on 21st June 1901. From this, Pridmore inferred that Wezel couldn’t have known of the approved design and that the patterns must therefore have been completed by early July at the latest. They were sent to India on 24th October 1901 and were submitted to the Royal Mint for comment. The authorities there criticised almost every part of the design except for the tiger and Persian and Nagari scripts on the reverse. This criticism was forwarded to the authorities in India, where the view of the Royal Mint was rejected except for agreement to a change in the obverse legend.

The first type of pattern shows on the reverse a tiger with the value in Nagari and Persian above and below and a lotus flower below. The second type has a slightly different reverse design.

Bare head of the King facing right. K.W incuse on the truncation of the neck. Around this is the legend:

EDUARDUS VII REX ET IMPERATOR
