Victoria (Crowned) – Silver – Rupee, Patterns – 1860

On 30th June 1859, the Treasury in London authorised the Master of the Royal Mint to prepare matrices and punches for the new Indian coinage. L.C. Wyon engraved the dies, and the initial patterns for the rupee were prepared in and dated 1860. Examples of this coin exist struck on both normal thickness and extra thick (piedfort) flans.

Victoria (Crowned) – Silver – Rupee, Initials JL below C on Obverse

On another note one interesting thing I noticed is that it seems that an easy way to identify the CJL rupees is to look for the wider section of dress to the left of the bodice. (comment from Bob Johnston).

Photos from Amit Surana who wrote: 1867 pattern of LC Wyon of Royal Mint was redesigned by Cal mint die engraver J Lutz. Pridmore has mentioned of 3 1867 patterns 2 were from Royal Mint and one was from Calcutta mint. J Lutz designed the 1870 5 & 10 rupees with CM & J initials in it, The CJL rupee also was designed by him probably between 1867-1870 when the 5 rupee also got minted. The two peculiar features that I have mentioned in the first picture is only found on 1867 pattern rupees, CJL rupees, and the obverse of 5 & 10 rupees.

Victoria (Crowned) – Silver – Rupee, Currency – 1862, with Dots

Wyon’s dies for the new coinage were dispatched to India in August 1861. However, upon arrival they were found to be technically inadequate for use in the Indian mints and new matrices had to be produced in Calcutta. Act XIII authorised the new coinage in April 1862, declaring the coins current from 1st November.

In 1893, the Times of India published an article clarifying the purpose of the dots found on some of the 1862 dated rupees. The article states that the Bombay Mint used a number of dots to indicate the year of manufacture, one dot for 1863 and eleven dots for 1873.

Victoria (Crowned) – Silver – Half Rupee, Currency – 1862

Distinguishing between the different varieties of half rupee is not always easy. Obverse A has 4 panels and was struck at Calcutta. Obverse D and B both have 4.75 panels to the jabot and I haven’t yet been able to determine the difference. Reverses I & II differ only in the clarity of the florets or cones and this apparent difference is not at all obvious.
