Letter from the Resident at Madopollam to Government, dated 10th May 1793

…The amount of copper coin in circulation at this factory is, as far as I am able to ascertain, on an average about 19 candies or 1000 pagodas worth, which, I am given to understand, is fully sufficient for the purposes of the inhabitants.

I humbly conceive that the exchange of the new coin of the weight of the dub should not exceed four for the fanam, forty eight for the rupee or one hundred and ninety two for the pagoda which was the average exchange until within these few years. The fewer there are the more convenient I am inclined to think it will be for the poorer classes of inhabitants, who generally carry all their property about them, and who, I should suppose, must therefore find the dubs inconvenient and difficult to secret.
