Nagpur – Raghuji I (1730-1755), Cuttack Mint – INO Ahmad Shah – Silver – Type 2

A new date reported for a well-known Bhonsla rupee

Many of us have been using Prashant Kulkarni’s excellent book about the coinage of the Bhonsla Rajas of Nagpur for more years than we would care to admit. Although it is now a fairly old publication, there have been relatively few additional or  “new” varieties reported.

One series that has puzzled me for some time is TYPE 4, Nagpur mint with mint-name “Cuttack”. Readers will be aware that this is reported in Prashant’s book as being available with regnal years 1 (ahd), 4, 5, and two varieties of 7. Perhaps all the missing years are out there waiting to be discovered and reported.  I have recently been able to obtain a coin of type 4 with the regnal year 6 clearly displayed (albeit, very close to the edge of the flan).

It has the same distinguishing marks as Prashant’s illustrations of Varieties 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 (i.e. the ones with regnal years ahd, 4 and 5. It weighs a pretty standard 11.4g approx., and displays the usual array of coutermarks, viz. A hollow circle, a hollow square, an “alpha”-shaped mark, and four dots arranged in a square. These are all on the faces, both obverse and reverse. There are also at least eight countermarks round the edge.

May we be told if any other so-far unreported dates have surfaced, please?

Nagpur – Raghuji I (1730-1755), Nagpur (written Surat) Mint – INO Muhammad Shah – Silver

Two more unreported regnal years on rupees of the Bhonsle Rajas of Nagpur.

In the ICS Newsletter number 32, I published as a recent find, a rupee of the Bhonslas struck at Nagpur, with the mint-name “Cuttack”,  Kulkarni type 4, which has the regnal year 6. Mr Kulkarni allotted the number 4.3.1 to it. I was somewhat surprised to discover another two unreported dates on two of my very modest collection of Bhonsle rupees. These are both type 3 coins with the mint-name “Surat”. Mr Kulkarni confirms that neither of these date-varieties have been reported to him.

These coins were struck during the reign of Raghuji the first (1730-1755AD) at the Nagpur mint. Raghuji's mint masters did not use their own design but copied the inscription from the rupees of the Mughal emperor, Mohammad Shah (1719-1748AD) struck at the Surat mint. They added a few mint marks here and there to make the coins look better, but did not bother to replace the mint-name for the place at which they were actually struck. The regnal year range is from year 6 to 24, and the AH date is rarely present in full.

The first is similar to Mr Kulkarni’s illustration of K.3.1, but with a slightly different arrangement of dot-clusters, and with an eight-pointed star in the second line of the obverse face. Unfortunately the third and fourth digits of the AH date are off the flan, but the regnal year is unmistakably,  and very clearly, a  “9”. This is a new year for this type, and this variety has been allocated the deignation 3.2.3 by Mr Kulkarni.

The second coin is very like K.3.6 and 3.7 (especially 3.6) , but with the year showing as “22”. It may be a little unclear in the accompanying photograph, but careful examination of the actual coin shows that the second “2” ends cleanly a fraction of a millimetre from the edge of the flan, and is definitely not an incomplete three. The only digit of the AH date visible on the flan is the initial “1”, which is not very helpful. This variety has been allocated the new number 3.7.1

Can anyone else help to fill the remaining gaps in the type 3 and type 4 series?

Nagpur – Unattributed – With Symbols, Mint? – Copper – Type 15

Although this type has been conventionally attributed to the Bhonslas of Nagpur, the iconography of the symbol on obverse suggests it to be a representation of Renuka, the mother goddess whose shrine is at Mahur in South Marathwada. Mahur was also a town of an eminent Jagirdar family which served under the Nizams (From Classical Numismatic Gallery).
