Bengal
Nawābs – Aḥmad Shāh – Katak (Cuttack) Mint, Silver
|
For most part of Ahmed Shah
Bahadur's reign under Nawab Alivardi Khan, Katak mint
was dormant as there was constant strife between Marathas (Bargis)
with Mir Habib and Sabaji Bhonsale.
The Marathas had Orissa under their control since May 1748. Alivardi
Khan, the nawab decided to recover Orissa, he assembled his troops in Katwa in March 1749 and marched to Orissa via Midnapur. He
defeated the Marathas in Midnapur on 5th March 1749 and reached Katak on 16th
March 1749. After investing the fort for a couple of weeks, he regained the
control of Barabati fort in Katak by May end 1749.
The Marathas retreated in the jungles of Katak. However, as soon as Alivardi Khan left Katak, the fort was reoccupied
by Marathas within a week. So this coin minted by the
Nawab for a very short duration. The date/RY combination of this coin matches
with the aforesaid history and along with Calligraphy it's surely Bengal Nawab
Issue and very very rare like Alinagar Kalkatta
issue. (from Vikram Chatterjee)
