Coins dated RY 44 and later were produced
after the treaty handing the Sūrat mint to the EIC. There have been
various suggestions as to who may have issued them ranging from the local
Nawābs, the French, to the Marathas, while it has been assumed that they
were not struck by the East India Company. There has not been any documentary
evidence to support any of these possible attributions.
Sūrat-type Rupees in the name of
Shāh ‘Ālam II with posthumous regnal years 50 and later, have been
known for some time and have proved enigmatic. They may have been produced by
the same authority that produced those dated RY 44 to 49.
