Murshīdābād Mint – Hammered Coinages – Gold, Shāh ‘Ālam II – 1765 to 1768

The first gold coins issued from the Murshīdābād mint, under the authority of the British, were minted in 1765 in an attempt to fill the gap left by the scarcity of silver coins (see Calcutta and also Comments below). Some of the Calcutta coins are reputed to be those marked with the letter C, but the identity of the Murshīdābād coins is not known.

A very small number of gold coins were issued from the Murshīdābād mint in 1794. They are identified from the secret marks shown below.
